Bees are astonishingly intelligent, deeply connected little beings whose work keeps ecosystems thriving and our communities fed. They help power sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, and healthy landscapes. On The Bee’s Knees, we invite you into their world — a place full of wonder, surprises, and quiet brilliance — and share simple, meaningful ways you can support the real busy bees of our planet.

Here, we focus on native, wild bees — the unsung pollinators who rarely make the headlines but play an irreplaceable role in keeping nature in balance. Their stories deserve the spotlight. Each episode introduces you not only to these quirky, fascinating insects but also to the people, projects, and ideas buzzing with energy around them.

Bees have a way of capturing your curiosity once you get to know them. Our hope is to help you learn something new, feel inspired, and maybe even take a few small steps that make a big difference for pollinators and the ecosystems we all depend on

Do bees even have knees?

The bee’s knees is a slang phrase from 1920s America meaning something excellent or the best. So: “She’s the bee’s knees” or “That shirt is the bee’s knees.”

And yes – bees have knees, sort of. They actually have six sections to their legs, each one connected by a joint. The one most like a knee is between the femur and tibia. Isn’t that excellent?
